A Thousand Splendid Suns

Assignment #4

In the novel A Thousand Splended Suns by Khaled Hosseini, Miriam is forced to marry Rasheed by her father and his wives. Knowing that many woman don't get treated as they should by their chosen husband, why do you think Jalil's wives wanted to put Miriam in that same position? What literary elements were used by Hosseini to show this?

  1. One reason Jalil's wives put Miriam in that postition to make her miserable. They didn't want their children to have to compete with Miriam over Jalil's children. Another reason is because Mariam was Nana's daughter. Nana was a woman who believed everyone was against her, turning her into a bitter woman. Jalil's wives didn't want anyone related to Nana to be around their children, less she corrupts their minds with Nana's words passed on to Mariam. Hosseini uses his foreshadowing to show that further tragedies awaited Mariam in the future, and with the fact that Mariam is an Afghanistan citizen, the reader can infer that her situation becoming worse would involve relationships with a male Afghanistan citizen.
